If you are planning to apply for an L1 visa, it is important to have all the necessary documents in order to ensure a smooth and successful application process. The L1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows companies to transfer employees from their foreign offices to their offices in the United States. We will provide you with a checklist of the required documents for an L1 visa application.

L1 Visa Requirements

Before we dive into the checklist, let’s first go over the basic requirements for an L1 visa. In order to be eligible for an L1 visa, you must meet the following criteria:

You must have worked for the company for at least one continuous year within the past three years.
You must be transferring to a position in the United States that is either managerial, executive, or requires specialized knowledge.
The company must have a qualifying relationship with the foreign company (parent, subsidiary, affiliate, or branch).

Checklist of Required Documents

Personal Documents

Valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining
Two recent passport-sized photos
Birth certificate
Marriage certificate (if applicable)
Divorce or death certificate (if applicable)
Police clearance certificate from all countries you have lived in for more than six months since the age of 16

Company Documents

Proof of the company’s qualifying relationship with the foreign company (e.g. articles of incorporation, stock certificates, etc.)
Proof of the company’s financial standing (e.g. tax returns, financial statements, etc.)
Letter from the company’s U.S. office confirming your transfer and position
Letter from the foreign company confirming your employment and position
Organizational chart showing your position within the company

Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker
L1 visa application fee
Premium processing fee (if applicable)
Proof of payment of the visa reciprocity fee (if applicable)

L1 Visa Duration

The L1 visa is initially granted for a period of up to three years. However, it can be extended for up to a total of seven years for managers and executives, and up to five years for specialized knowledge employees. After the maximum duration has been reached, the visa holder must leave the United States for at least one year before being eligible for another L1 visa.
